The Master of Ballantrae Customer Reviews
:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Shirley Schwartz -- An amazing psychological study mid 18th Century : Nobody can do bad guys like Robert Louis Stevenson. Case in point - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Treasure Island, and this one, The Master of Ballantrae. If you've never read a RLS book, then this is a good one to start with. The book begins with the beginning of the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland mid 18th Century. The Ballantrae family decides to hedge its bets with this rebellion. The eldest bother James will fight for the Stuarts, and the younger brother Henry, will remain loyal to the reigning king, and manage the family estates. Thus begins a lifelong animosity and hatred between the two brothers. This is a book that takes us to France, India, America and of course Scotland. It is as good a psychological expose as you'll find. It has a truly evil character who is incapable of human emotions. The story is told by Mr. Mackeller, Henry's general factotum and secretary. And all of this is told in the most hauntingly beautiful language you have ever encountered. For his day RLS was well-ahead of the pack in showing no compunction in illustrating so many wrong-doings and family scandals and secrets. He was a tell-it-as-it-is type of author. I highly recommend any of his books. To my great delight, I had this one in my own library, and it got lost in the shuffle. Thank goodness I did a cleanup in my bookshelves. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Annette -- What's this? : This e-book edition is obviously a fraud! The text was tampered with, for example the word 'was' was replaced by 'came into', which made the whole thing unreadable. I have by now gotten the original text in print, which I enjoy greatly.
